The materials represented in this guide may be accessed through the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College. Rauner Library is located in Webster Hall. The materials must be used on-site and may not leave Rauner Library.

Rauner Special Collections Library is open to the public and in most cases no appointment is necessary. Introduction to the Collection

Contains correspondence, reports, and other papers relating to the American Defense Dartmouth Group. Includes correspondence to the American Defense Groups of Columbia, Cornell, and Harvard, as well as National Defense Alliance, Navy V-1,V-5, V-7 and V-11 programs.

Introduction

The American Defense Dartmouth Group was established around the opening of College in September 1940. It was established by President Ernest Martin Hopkins to serve as a central agency for the defense activities of the College and was headed by Professor Harold J. Tobin of the Political Science department. Tobin had studied defense plans for many years and had co-author of the book "Mobilizing Civilian America."
