Chronology
| Nov 1891 |
Dartmouth College Alumni Association proposes that the Trustees turn over control and management of athletics to the Alumni
Association and offers to raise funds for renovation of existing facilities and a new athletic field.
|
| Feb 8, 1892 |
Trustees approve the Alumni Association proposal. |
| Jun 1892 |
The Advisory Committee to the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association drafts a report outlining plans for a new athletic
field and renovations to existing facilities. It also recommends the formation of a nine-member athletic committee.
|
| Jun 28, 1893 |
Alumni Association Committee on Athletics is formed. Dr. Edward Cowles ('59) serves as President until 1899. |
| Oct 3, 1893 |
The new Alumni Athletic Field (Oval) and grandstand is formally presented by the alumni to the College. |
| Jun 13, 1896 |
The first Constitution of the Athletic Committee drafted by Edward K. Hall ('92) is adopted. The Athletic Committee is described
as a nine-member group consisting of three alumni, three faculty, and three students - the managers of the football, baseball,
and track athletic squads or associations. Advisory committees were to be established for the three core sports and all Dartmouth
undergraduates were considered members. Each association would be supported by collecting volunteer subscriptions (referred
to as “taxes” by undergraduates).
|
| Summer 1899 |
A revision of the Athletic Committee Constitution is drafted and proposed. In part, the revision calls for the renaming of
the organization from the Athletic Committee to the Dartmouth College Athletic Council. Conditions of control are outlined
in a document called “Rules and Regulations of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council”, which becomes effective in 1900.
|
| Mar 3, 1900 |
A meeting of the Dartmouth undergraduates approves the 1899 constitutional revision, with modifications. |
| 1901 |
President Tucker appoints Irving J. French ('01) as Graduate Manager of the Athletic Council, its first executive officer. |
| 1903 |
Ernest M. Hopkins ('01), future Dartmouth President, is appointed as the second Graduate Manager of the Athletic Council. |
| 1904 |
A redrafting of the “Rules and Regulations of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council” includes a Constitution and By-Laws.
The By-Laws contain a major change, which includes provision for the new position of Graduate Manager. Also, the Athletic
Council is, itself, excluded from the constitutional amending process.
|
| 1912 |
The Athletic Council Constitution and By-Laws are again reprinted. A major change within the By-Laws restricts the freshman
class from participating in varsity athletics, which had unofficially been in effect since 1909.
|
| Mar 24, 1917 |
The Athletic Council Constitution is again amended to make faculty and alumni memberships last for three years each instead
of one, with one member from each of the two groups retiring each year.
|
| 1921 |
The trustees vote to turn over to the Athletic Council maintenance and supervision of the athletic field and tennis courts. |
| 1926 |
The Trustees vote to create, with Athletic Council approval, the offices of Athletic Supervisor and Business Manager of Athletics. |
| Fall 1926 |
Harry R. “Rip” Heneage ('07) is elected the first Supervisor of Athletics. He assumes responsibilities on January 1, 1927
and holds the position until September 1, 1936.
|
| 1927 |
Jurisdiction of the financial and operating aspects of all athletics (except winter sports controlled by the Dartmouth Outing
Club) is turned over to the Athletic Council. The Supervisor of Athletics becomes the new executive officer, with the Business
Manager as assistant.
|
| Jun 16, 1928 |
Trustees approve changes to the Constitution of the Athletic Association: students on the Council are elected from the pool
of student managers; and, undergraduate representation in matters of the Association's constitutional changes becomes the
responsibility of the student organization Palaeopitus.
|
| Jan 1, 1937 |
After acting as interim Athletic Supervisor, William H. McCarter ('19) is elected Athletic Director by the Athletic Council,
the first to hold that title. He retires in June of 1954.
|
| Jul 1954 |
Robert A. “Red” Rolfe ('31) is elected the new Athletic Director. He remains in the position until June of 1967. |
| Jul 1967 |
Seaver Peters ('54) becomes the fourth Athletic Director at Dartmouth. He serves until June of 1983. |
| Jul 1984 |
Edward “Ted” Leland is hired as the only non-Dartmouth alumni Athletic Director, to date. He resigns his position in January
of 1989.
|
| Jul 1989 |
Richard “Dick” G. Jaeger ('59) becomes the sixth Dartmouth Athletic Director. |
| 1991/1992 - present |
The Dartmouth College Athletic Department (DCAD) is born from the Dartmouth College Athletic Council (DCAC) and assumes the
responsibility of administration of Dartmouth athletics.
|
| Present |
The Athletic Council continues to date to serve in an advisory role to the Athletic Director and the Dean of the College.
The Athletic Council consists of: four members of the College administration - Vice President/Treasurer, Athletic Director,
Dean of Students, Medical Director; four members of the Alumni Council; two faculty members; and, four undergraduate students.
|
The Dartmouth College Athletic Department Records, 1924 - 1960 [1939 - 1958], 6.5 linear feet (9 boxes), contain scheduling
and financial correspondence, financial and annual reports, topical files, sports schedules, team rosters, and press guides.

The Dartmouth College Athletic Department Records are organized into three series:
-
FINANCIAL CORRESPONDENCE AND REPORTS, 1924 - 1952;
-
SCHEDULING CORRESPONDENCE, 1939 - 1960; and,
-
TOPICAL FILES, 1949 - 1958.
Series I. FINANCIAL CORRESPONDENCE AND REPORTS, 1924 - 1952, 1.25 linear feet, consists of correspondence of the Dartmouth
College Athletic Council (DCAC) Graduate Treasurer, and later College Bursar, Max A. Norton, as well as some financial reports.
Some of the correspondence pertains to investments management via the firm of Green, Ellis, and Anderson of New York City
in the 1920's and 1930's. There is correspondence between Max Norton and Athletic Director William H. McCarter concerning
DCAC funds and operations. There is also correspondence with financial institutions such as Bank of Boston and Dartmouth National
Bank concerning investments and accounts. Also within this series is DCAC financial information in the form of budget reports,
general fund reports, auditors' reports, and consolidated financial reports. This series is arranged alphabetically by subject.
Series II. SCHEDULING CORRESPONDENCE, 1939 - 1960, 4 linear feet, contains correspondence between the Dartmouth Athletic Directors
William H. McCarter or Robert “Red” Rolfe and the athletic directors and councils of colleges, universities, secondary schools,
and other institutions with whom the Dartmouth College Athletic Council (DCAC) scheduled athletic events. The series consists
of two groups of correspondence. The first contains information on contracts for events, travel arrangements and itineraries,
rooms and meals for Dartmouth and opponents' visiting teams, ticket reservations, and assignment of referees and officials.
It is arranged alphabetically by name of the institutions with which there was scheduling correspondence. The second group
of correspondence deals with Dartmouth team scheduling for the academic years 1955 - 1956 to 1958 - 1959, but also includes
earlier correspondence that deals with advanced scheduling for those years. Also included in the second group are team rosters,
press guides, weekly team standings, and final team records per season. The second group is arranged alphabetically by Dartmouth
sports team.
Series III. TOPICAL FILES, 1949 - 1958, 1.25 linear feet, is comprised of Dartmouth College Athletic Council (DCAC) office
files on various subjects. The files contain
correspondence, meetings minutes, rule books, announcements, mailings, flyers, sports information releases, and other documents.
The largest portion of these files pertains to collegiate leagues, conferences, and athletic associations, such as the Ivy
League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Another group
of files covers a wide range of subjects such as DCAC members, cheerleading, insurance, sports information releases, publicity,
undergraduate managers, and referees and officials. Within the last group is correspondence with College offices, such as
Business Manager, Secretary, Treasurer, Dean, Bursar/Comptroller, Admissions, Personnel, and the President's Office. The files
are arranged alphabetically by subject within each group.
Related materials can be found in Dartmouth College Library by searching the Dartmouth College Information System (DCIS).
In-house vertical and photograph files on the Dartmouth College Athletic Department/Council are located in Dartmouth College
