Biography

A. Alexander Fanelli was born on November 20, 1920 in New Rochelle, New York. He entered Dartmouth College as a member of the class of 1942. Following Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served until 1945. He returned to Dartmouth in 1946 and completed his A.B. degree. He then earned an M.A. degree in sociology in 1948 and did further graduate study at the University of Michigan from 1949 to 1951. He was an instructor in the Great Issues Course at Dartmouth in 1947-49 and again in 1951-52 and was a teaching fellow at the University of Michican in l949-51. After teaching sociology at Mississippi State College and a career in the foreign service, he returned to Dartmouth in 1967 as special assistant to President Dickey and helped plan the College's bicentennial. Mr. Fanelli subsequently served as special assistant to Presidents Kemeny and McLaughlin and retired in 1986.

Scope and Contents of Collection

The oral history interview of A. Alexander Fanelli is comprised of audiocassette recordings and an indexed transcript of the recordings. The interview was conducted by Jane L. Carroll during June and July 1996. The entire interview runs for approximately six hours and covers the changes that shaped Dartmouth with the advent of coeducation, the increase in study abroad programs, the implementation of the Year Round Plan, and the growing diversity of the student body and faculty.
