Introduction to the Collection

The oral history interview of Michael Choukas, Jr. is comprised of audiocassette recordings and an indexed transcript of the recordings. The interview was conducted by Jane L. Carroll during September 1996. The entire interview runs for approximately 3 hours and covers his experiences growing up in Hanover as the child of a Dartmouth professor, his high school teaching career and his career at Dartmouth working in development and alumni relations.

Biography

Born March 23, 1928, Michael Choukas came to Hanover with his family as a young child where his father was a professor of sociology at Dartmouth. He attended Vermont Academy and graduated from Dartmouth College in the class of 1951. After military duty with the Marines, Choukas began a high school teaching career, spending 23 years at Vermont Academy, the last twelve serving as headmaster. Following his retirement from Vermont Academy, he came to Dartmouth in 1977 to begin a second career in development and alumni relations. Choukas retired from Dartmouth in 1994.
