Biography

Marianne Hirsch is William Peterfield Trent Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University and Professor in the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. She is the Co-Director of the Center for the Critical Analysis of Social Difference. She was born in Romania and educated at Brown University where she received her BA/MA and Ph.D. degrees. Before moving to Columbia, she taught at Dartmouth College from 1974 to 2004, most recently as the Ted and Helen Geisel Third Century Professor in the Humanities.
