BiographyFred Berthold was born on December 9, 1922 in Webster Groves, Missouri. He completed his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth in 1945 and received his PhD in Religion from the University of Chicago. He joined the faculty of Dartmouth in 1949 and became the first dean of the William Jewett Tucker Foundation (1957-1962). Berthold was appointed the first Preston H. Kelsey Professor of Religion in 1971 and retired from the college in 1993. Scope and Contents of CollectionThe oral history interview of Fred Berthold is comprised of audiocassette recordings and an indexed transcript of the recordings. The interview was conducted by Jane L. Carroll during May 1998. The entire interview runs for approximately three and a half hours and covers events, programs, organizations and individuals connected with Dartmouth during his undergraduate years until his retirement in 1993.
