BiographyCharles E. Hutchinson was born on December 18, 1935 and is a native of Parkersburg, West Virginia. He received his B.S. in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1957 and his master's (1961) and doctoral degrees (1963) from Stanford University. He was a lecturer at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1963-1965 and then joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, as associate professor of electrical and computer engineering in 1965. He was promoted to full professor in 1969 and it was at UMass-Amherst that he got his first taste of academic administration, as associate dean for academic affairs and chair of the department of electrical and computer engineering. He was appointed dean of the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College in 1984 and served in that position until 1993 and again from 1997-1998. He also held the position of John S. Krehbiel, Sr. Professor of Engineering. He retired from teaching in 2003. In 2000, Professor Hutchinson became co-founder and chairman of the board of Glycofi, Inc.
