Introduction to the Collection

The oral history interview of Ralph Manuel is comprised of audiocassette recordings and an indexed transcript of the recordings. The interview was conducted by Daniel Daily during June and July 2002. The entire interview runs for approximately five hours and covers his undergraduate years and his career at Dartmouth, serving Presidents Dickey, Kemeny and McLaughlin.

Biography

Ralph Manuel was born on April 21, 1936 in Frederick, Maryland and attended public schools in Brunswick, Maryland. He matriculated with the class of 1958 at Dartmouth College. While at Dartmouth, he was part of Naval ROTC, earning an ensign commission upon graduation in 1958. Following graduation, Manuel spent four years in the Navy. Upon his discharge, he returned to Dartmouth as an assistant director of admissions and spent six years in that position. He left Dartmouth and went to the University of Illinois in 1968 to earn a doctorate in educational administration. Upon completion of his degree in 1971, he returned to Dartmouth as an associate dean of freshmen and director of counseling. The following year he was appointed dean of freshmen and in 1975, he was appointed Dean of the College. Dean Manuel left Dartmouth in in 1982 to become the headmaster of Culver Military Academy.
