Biography

Agnar Pytte was born in Norway in 1932 and became a naturalized US citizen. He graduated from Princeton University as a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1953 and received the AM and the PhD degrees from Harvard University in 1954 and 1958, respectively. He joined the Dartmouth College faculty as an instructor in 1957, reaching the rank of professor in 1967. He served as chairman of the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 1971 to 1975. In 1975, he was named Associate Dean of the Faculty for the Sciences and Dean of Graduate Studies, becoming Provost in 1982. In 1981, he was appointed to the Eleanor and Kelvin Smith Professorship in Physics. In 1987, he left Dartmouth to become president of Case Western Reserve University. He retired in 1999.

Scope and Contents of Collection

The oral history interview of Agnar Pytte is comprised of audiocassette recordings and an indexed transcript of the recordings. The interview was conducted by Daniel Daily on May 15, 2002. The entire interview runs for approximately 2 hours and covers his teaching and administrative career at Dartmouth, serving under Presidents Dickey, Kemeny and McLaughlin.
