John Copenhaver, Class of 1946 and Professor of Biology at Dartmouth College. Oral History interview documenting his undergraduate years and teaching career at Dartmouth during the presidencies of John Sloan Dickey, John Kemeny and David McLaughlin.

Introduction to the Collection

The oral history interview of John Copenhaver is comprised of audiocassette recordings and an indexed transcript of the recordings. The interview was conducted by Jane L. Carroll in June 1996. The entire interview runs approximately two hours and covers Thus his interview covered the advent of coeducation, the reshaping of the curriculum, the increasing diversity of the student body and the faculty, and the student protests of those times. He also speaks to the reshaping of the sciences on campus. Finally, Professor Copenhaver reviews the administrations of Presidents Kemeny and McLaughlin.

Biography

John Copenhaver was born on Dec. 21, 1922 in Ralston, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1940-43 as a radio operator on a destroyer in the Atlantic and attended Dartmouth as a member of the V12 Unit from 1943-46. He completed his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth in 1946 and received his PhD. in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin in 1950. Professor Copenhaver joined the Dartmouth faculty for the first time as an instructor in the summer of 1946 and then returned as an assistant professor of zoology in 1953 and became a full professor in 1960. Professor Copenhaver retired from the college in 1987.
