THE PAPERS OF THE LATHAM FAMILY

OF LYME, NEW HAMPSHIRE

INVENTORY

INTRODUCTION

The papers of the Latham family of Lyme, New Hampshire, which came to the Dartmouth College Library in the 20th century, give a splendid picture of the business carried on, in the 19th century, by the proprietors and customers of a general store showing purchases and how payments were made. This store was operated by Arthur Latham, who was the first postmaster of Lyme, and continued by his sons, Bezer and Arthur, Jr.

Containing neither biographical nor genealogical material, these papers are housed in 23 boxes utilizing 25 feet of shelf space. They consist chiefly of correspondence, financial records, orders, and receipts connected with the store, though they also include some post office records. In addition, there is a folder of papers relating to Thomas Perkins who was a town treasurer and the builder of the Perkins Hotel. Since the Lathams were active in civic affairs there are also some records concerning Lyme, as well as deeds to property there and in other New Hampshire and neighboring Vermont towns.

There are also in the general collection of manuscripts more holdings concerning the Lathams, their store, and Lyme, New Hampshire.
