INTRODUCTION

The Papers of the Waterville Valley Association and Waterville, New Hampshire (1830-1950), comprise 11.5 linear shelf feet of material, which came to Dartmouth c. 1960 as the gifts (in separate lots) of Nathaniel L. Goodrich and Roger P. Welles, a former Treasurer of the Association. These Papers are divided equally between documents concerning Waterville-Waterville Valley local history, and the Waterville Valley Association (1919-48), whose purpose was the management of a vacation resort in Waterville. The Association was formed as a result of guests to the area incorporating, in order to protect it from being changed and `developed' as a facility beyond their means. David Sands Austin, 2nd (1800-1954), Dartmouth, 1904, was lessee and manager of the properties (1920-39). Records of property, the financing of the operation and its tax expenditures appear nearly complete.

The local history half of this collection features: photographs (1870-1950), legal instruments which include a few Civil War pieces, a file on the Waterville Inn (1861-1967) and considerable Waterville fiscal documents, as, town reports and (1833-1908) land sales for tax payments. Some of the correspondence (see Box IV, Folders 7-8) concerns efforts, especially of The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, to lobby for the conservation of regions including the Waterville Valley. Copies of early guide books to the area by A. L. Goodrich, and the manuscript of Waterville Valley (1952), by N. L. Goodrich, will be found in this local history portion of the papers. Waterville Valley is the first book published by the Stinehour Press of Lunenburg, Vermont.
