INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION

The Hugh Mason Wade collection is a gift by the author and includes, at this point, only literary materials relating to some of his major works. Notes, drafts, and galley proofs make up the majority of the papers, but there are also a few letters and reviews concerning each of these works. A set of galley proofs for The French Canadians, 1760-1945 and a number of reviews of The French-Canadian Outlook are in the native language. At present the collection consists of eight boxes of materials occupying approximately ten linear shelf feet.

The addendum to the Papers of Hugh Mason Wade became the property of the Dartmouth College Library early in 1986, after Mr. Wade's death. A noted scholar and historian, Mason Wade's specialty was Canadian history; because of Dartmouth's interest in a possible Canadian Studies program, and because of the commitment to Northern studies in the college community, this collection is particularly valuable to the Library.

Hugh Mason Wade was born July 3, 1913, in New York City. Much of his childhood, however, was spent in Cornish, New Hampshire, where his family owned a summer home. His papers include materials that lend valuable insight into the Cornish Colony families of a few years earlier. Wade was educated in private schools and graduated from Harvard University in 1935. He worked in publishing houses for a few years, and published his own first book, Margaret Fuller: Whetstone of Genius in 1940. Francis Parkman: Heroic Historian followed in 1942, and the following year Wade was appointed a Guggenheim Fellow in Canadian History. That grant, and one from the Carnegie Foundation in 1946, enabled Wade to live and travel in Canada; the research from those years appeared in his classic history The French Canadians, 1760-1945, published in 1955.

Mason Wade's career encompassed writing, diplomacy (see Biographical Information) and teaching. In 1955, he was appointed Director of the new Canadian Studies program at the University of Rochester, New York. That program became the prototype for others across the country. Many of the materials in this collection deal with UR's Canadian Studies program, including student papers from courses taught by Mason Wade. In 1965, Wade moved on, to become Senior Professor of History at the University of Western Ontario. He retired from that position in 1972 and returned to Cornish, New Hampshire, where he died in January 1986.

The collection occupies 14 boxes or approximately 17.5 linear feet of shelf space. Materials include articles, book manuscripts, correspondence and clippings, speeches, course information, scholarly papers, conference materials, student papers, magazines and pamphlets. There is a wealth of information contained in the collection; scholars interested in the Cornish Colony, or those concerned with Quebec political history or the history of the Acadian people will find the Wade papers valuable. An unpublished memoir of Wade's life is included, as is the manuscript of a major book on the Canadian Maritime Provinces, entitled Maritime Melting Pot.

No restrictions have been placed on the use of this collection. Further information concerning Hugh Mason Wade may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
