INTRODUCTION

The Milnes, Lorus Johnson and Margery Joan (Greene), were married in 1939. They are educators, naturalist-biologists, and the co-authors of some 40 books and numerous articles. Lorus Milne was born in Ottawa in 1910; he later was naturalized a United States citizen. He received a doctorate from Harvard in 1936. Margery Milne was born in New York City in 1914, and she received her doctorate from Radcliffe in 1939. In preparation for their diverse publications the Milnes have done field work in many parts of the world, and have been research or teaching fellows at institutions such as Woods Hole Marine Labs and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Since 1948 Lorus Milne has been Professor of Zoology at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.

The papers of Lorus and Margery Milne, donated by the authors to Dartmouth College, provide records of their career from 1946 through 1969. The Dartmouth College Library received these papers in installments from 1963 through 1969. Chief among the larger groups of material in this collection are the manuscripts and printed volumes of High School Biology, a text prepared by the American Institute of Biological Sciences, to which the Milnes contributed as consultant-writers in 1959-62. Among other influential volumes represented in these papers are The Balance of Nature and The Senses of Animals and Men, works comprehensive and thematic in scope. Milne articles have appeared in Scientific American, The American Scholar, Audubon Magazine and Atlantic Monthly; certain of the books and articles have been translated. This collection contains a few early drafts, thus it possesses a feature of particular bibliographic interest.

The papers are housed in 14 Paige Miracle Boxes and 3 Hollinger boxes, and they are divided about evenly between printed and manuscript material. Caution to readers: some of the manuscripts were assembled with unreliable adhesives; extreme care is advised when using them.
