Abstract:

The Nellie L. Pierce collection on Enfield, NH (1761-1975). Includes town reports, town meeting notices, warrants, tax lists, land records, deeds, school registers, birth, death, and marriage records, census returns, correspondence, pamphlets, photographs, genealogical material as well as material relating to schools, businesses, covered bridges, social and religious organizations, and military records of Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers from Enfield. Also includes information on the Shaker colony and some personal papers of Pierce.

Introduction to the Collection

The Nellie L. Pierce collection on Enfield, NH, consists of town government records, correspondence, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, cemetery and land transfer records, photographs, school registers, highway records, deeds, calling cards, business advertisements, maps, tax records and records of births, deaths and marriages. Of note are the extensive genealogical records of Enfield residents and material related to the Shaker settlement in Enfield as well as material documenting the military history of the town, including Revolutionary and Civil War records. Personal materials related to Pierce's research and life in Enfield as well as materials on New Hampshire and Vermont history are also included in the collection.

Introduction

Nellie Lydia White was born November 19, 1895, in Claremont, NH. She moved to Enfield in 1897, where her grandfather L.W. Currier, was a member of an old Enfield family, a businessman and justice of the peace. She attended Enfield schools and graduated from New Hampshire University in 1916. After her marriage to Howard R. Pierce in that same year, Pierce continued to live in Enfield and became active in many clubs and organizations. In 1932, Pierce earned a B.S. degree in library science from Simmons College after which she became Enfield's part-time librarian and joined the Dartmouth College Library system, eventually becoming head librarian at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration library.
