THE PAPERS OF

CLARENCE E. CARR, 1853-1931

INTRODUCTION THE PAPERS OF CLARENCE EDGAR CARR

Clarence Edgar Carr, a graduate of Dartmouth College in the Class of 1875, was a lawyer, businessman, and politician. His papers, consisting of personal correspondence, documents, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, printed material, and a mass of newspaper clippings, cover his personal, business, and political activities for over a fifty-year period. The bulk of these papers came to Dartmouth College Library in 1966 through Proctor Academy, Andover, New Hampshire, and John P. Carr, a son.

Clarence Carr, a Democrat and a progressive, was active in many phases of public life, and, although failing to win in his two gubernatorial campaigns in 1908 and 1910, he nevertheless served on numerous public and private committees in many organizations. Two of his greatest concerns centered around the consolidation of railroads in New England and tax reform. These activities to which he devoted so much time and effort highlight his varied interests and civic conscientiousness. Of note is his personal generosity to people who needed financial assistance, advice, or encouragement.

The Carr Papers had been moved at least twice on the Proctor Academy campus and where original filing arrangement appeared to be maintained this was done so by Dartmouth. However, other portions of the collection had to be re-created. These papers are housed in 23 consecutively numbered boxes covering 32 linear shelf feet.
