INTRODUCTION

The papers of Albert Oscar Brown came to the Dartmouth College Library in 1975 as a gift of his nephew, Charles Brown McLaughlin, Dartmouth, Class of 1914. Mr. Brown, the son of Charles Osgood and Elizabeth (Langmaid) Brown, was born in Northwood, New Hampshire, in 1853, and was an alumnus of Dartmouth, Class of 1878.

A graduate of Boston University Law School, where he received an LLB degree in 1884, AOB practiced law in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was a Dartmouth Trustee, a Manchester bank president, chairman of the New Hampshire Tax Commission, and governor of the state. All these occupations are represented in varying degrees by correspondence, reports, and cancelled checks. There are also papers of Susie (Clarke) Brown, his wife, which include correspondence, receipts for household expenses, specifications for house repairs, and cancelled checks. This material is housed in 15 boxes using 13 linear shelf feet.

Albert Oscar Brown died in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1937.
