INTRODUCTION

Richard Jewett Lougee was born in 1905 in Malden, Massachusetts; he graduated from Dartmouth in 1927, and received his doctoral degree in Geology from Columbia in 1938. Lougee taught Geology at Colby College in Waterville, Maine (1936-1947), then at Clark University (Worcester, Massachusetts) until his death in 1960. Clara Rom Lougee (born ca. 1905) and Richard Lougee were married in 1936; drafts of 3 or 4 of Clara Lougee's papers are held in this collection. She compiled the 1976 publication Late-Glacial Chronology, a final presentation of her husband's research.

Richard Lougee had propounded and was accumulating evidence for a new theory of the Ice Age at the time of his death. Notice in Time Magazine drew public attention to Lougee's theory that only one ice cap (and not several) covered Canada and the northern United States during the Pleistocene Age, and disappeared 25,000 years ago. During his career Lougee conducted field work in New England, the northeastern United States and Canada, Scandanavia (1953-1954), Alaska (1943 and 1948), Novaya Zemlya (U.S.S.R., 1937) and Mississippi (1935-1936). In conjunction with his writing he mapped and photographed these and other regions. Lougee was a delegate to the 1937 International Geological Congress in the U.S.S.R.; in 1952 he lead an excursion for the I.G.C. throughout New England, publishing a guidebook. As Secretary (1954-1956) of the International Geographical Union Commission on Atlantic erosion surfaces, Lougee contributed to a series of reports of findings, tied to events of the Pleistocene Age. He was a Fulbright lecturer in Norway in 1953-1954. Lougee wrote some 50 articles on geology.

The Lougee collection occupies 12 linear shelf feet. Fully one-half of the collection is illustrative material: a few maps, photographs, glass lantern and photographic slides and films. The remainder is manuscripts of geology papers, diaries and correspondence. Clara Rom Lougee donated the collection to Dartmouth in 1981, the year she died.
