INTRODUCTION

The Dartmouth College Library received the papers of Frances Ann Johnson Hancock in 1980, the gift of a sister, Mrs. Leta J. Fish of Bethlehem, New Hampshire. For many years a teacher in Bethlehem and Littleton schools, Frances Ann Hancock also pursued careers as a White Mountains historian and a writer on New Hampshire topics.

Born in Whitefield, New Hampshire on June 10, 1900, Frances Ann Johnson graduated from Plymouth Normal School (now Plymouth State College) in 1920. Intensely interested in New Hampshire subjects, she published her first composition, a song entitled “Old Man of the Mountains” in 1926; over the years many articles, poems and stories flowed from her pen. Some of her articles, such as New Hampshire Facts and Folks and Do You Know New Hampshire? were published weekly in local newspapers. A popular teacher, Miss Johnson also developed several textbooks for use in the teaching of English and New Hampshire history. One book in particular, New Hampshire For Young Folks, published in 1944, attracted favorable comments from many educators.

In 1961, Frances Ann Johnson married Frank R. Hancock, himself a teacher, and the Director of the Bretton Woods Boy Singers, a popular White Mountains summer attraction for over 60 years. Mrs. Hancock continued her writing career, completing several more textbooks, and publishing a history of the Bretton Woods Boy Singers and a book of poetry, Hill Country Autumn, before her death in 1979.

This collection is very strongly oriented to New Hampshire, and particularly to the White Mountains region. A mine of information, the papers consist mainly of newspaper clippings, pamphlets, notes, brochures and postcards highlighting New Hampshire's scenic beauty and unique geological history. A small amount of personal material is also present in the collection, as are many of Mrs. Hancock's manuscripts.

New Hampshire historians will find two small groups of the papers of particular interest. The first is a record of the controversy between conservationists and highway men over putting Interstate 93 through Franconia Notch. The dispute is documented in the papers by newspaper clippings, correspondence, photocopies of official state documents and a copy of the Environmental Impact Statement prepared on the Franconia Notch area. The second group of papers consists of photocopies of a book by Mabelle Geddes Russell, and of a handwritten statement by her father, Edward Geddes, describing the 1916 ascent of the Old Man of the Mountains to anchor “him” to the mountain.

The papers occupy 12 boxes or approximately 15 linear feet of shelf space. No restrictions have been placed on use of the materials; however, in some cases, photocopying will be at the discretion of Special Collections staff. Further information concerning Frances Ann Johnson Hancock may be found in the papers of the Bretton Woods Boy Singers in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
