INTRODUCTION

The Dartmouth College Library received the papers of Andrew B. Foster in 1974 and 1982, the gifts of Mrs. Barbara Kirk Foster. Previously, in 1965, an anonymous donor had presented the Library with a set of three Audubon double elephant folios as a memorial to Foster. A special case was built to hold the Audubon folios, and the colorful bird prints are permanently on display in the Treasure Room of Special Collections.

Born in Philadelphia in 1903, Andrew B. Foster graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925. He received a BA degree from Cambridge University in 1929, and it was followed by an MA in 1932. The following year Foster was granted a Penfield scholarship from the University of Pennsylvania, and travelled to Germany to complete the research for his thesis, The Free City of Danzig. While in Germany, he served for six months as a deputy district inspector for the Saar Plebiscite Commission. In 1935 he was appointed to the Foreign Service, where he remained until his retirement in 1957.

The Andrew B. Foster collection consists of a biography written by Mrs. Barbara Kirk Foster, course notes from Cambridge University and other schools, Foreign Service directories and reports, manuscript and notes concerning Foster's thesis, material from his period of service with the Saar Plebiscite Commission, and a section of reports, correspondence, and research materials that date from Foster's chairmanship of the Trustees Planning Committee's Subcommittee on Student Health at Dartmouth College in 1958-1959. No personal items, nor papers from Foster's diplomatic posts are included in the collection.

The collection is housed in 8 boxes, occupying approximately 9 linear feet of shelf space. Only the biography, entitled The Chronicle of Andrew, is restricted. It may be seen only with prior written permission from the Foster family. All other materials within the collection are open to inspection by researchers. Further information concerning Andrew B. Foster may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
