Abstract:

Agnes Vernon Bartlett, physician and medical officer for the United States War Relocation Authority (WRA) during WWII. Professor of Clinical Surgery at Dartmouth Medical School. Contains correspondence, essays, war ration books, memos, meeting minutes, pay slips, travel forms, reports, a speech, booklets, programs, newsletters, newspapers, publications, clippings, ephemera, and photographs related to Bartlett's service with the WRA and as a trustee of the Brookhaven Home for Boys.

Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Agnes Vernon Bartlett consist of correspondence, essays, war ration books, memos, medical staff meeting minutes, pay slips, travel forms, reports, a speech, booklets, programs, newsletters, articles, newspapers, magazines, clippings, ephemera, and photographs relating to Bartlett’s service as a medical officer in the United States War Relocation Authority (WRA), the internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII and her advocacy for child welfare as a trustee of Brookhaven Home for Boys. Of note are newspapers and publications from WRA internment camps.

Biography

Agnes Vernon Bartlett was born March 18, 1911, in Kyoto, Japan. She attended Bradford Junior College and Mt. Holyoke College, receiving her A. B. degree in 1934. In 1938, she received her M. D. degree from Yale University School of Medicine, and completed her internship and residencies at Massachusetts Memorial Hospitals in Boston. From 1944-1945, Bartlett served as a physician, and later as principal medical officer in the War Relocation Authority Centers at Poston, Arizona, and Manzanar, California. From 1948-1950, Bartlett was a Clinical Assistant in Pharmacology (Anesthesia) at Dartmouth Medical School. She returned to the Medical School in 1964, after several years of private practice. In 1971 Bartlett was named Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery. She retired in 1976. Bartlett also served as a trustee of Brookhaven Home for Boys in Chelsea, VT. Bartlett died on August 7, 1990, in Hanover, NH.

Contains both general correspondence and letters related to Bartlett's appointment as medical officer for the War Relocation Authority. Of note is wartime correspondence between Bartlett and her mother, Fanny Bartlett during Bartlett's station in Poston, Arizona during WWII. Transcripts of these letters as well as photocopies compiled by Bartlett are also included.
