THE PAPERS OF RAMON GUTHRIE

The papers of Ramon Guthrie, poet, teacher, writer and artist, received from Mr. Guthrie and his literary executor Alexander Laing, are housed in 13 boxes and 1 portfolio or 7 linear shelf feet. These papers covering the years 1919-1973 consist primarily of correspondence and poetry, writings, and sketches. However, there are some financial records, personal data, information concerning his Dartmouth College teaching career, reviews by and aobut R.G. and photographs.

Mr. Guthrie always felt that poems in typescript form were suitable for publication. Therefore, his poetry is divided into single manuscript poems and single typescript poems. Typescripts, galleys and notes and drafts of his last book of poems, Maximum Security Ward, are filed in one box as well as notes and drafts of Asbestos Phoenix. An early autobiographical poem Instead of Abel appears in another box. The majority of poems both in manuscript and typescript form are from Graffiti (1959), Asbestos Phoenix (1968) and Maximum Security Ward (1971).

Other Ramon Guthrie material may be found in Dartmouth's general manuscript holdings, individually catalogued letters (these relate chiefly to Sinclair Lewis) and in the Papers of Alexander K. Laing, for which there is a guide. Dartmouth's Hopkins Center Galleries have on deposit original oil paintings of Guthrie. Stella Bowen's painting of Ramon Guthrie hangs in Sanborn House.

Use of the papers is unrestricted.

AN ADDENDUM TO THE PAPERS OF RAMON GUTHRIE IN THE DARTMOUTH COLLEGE LIBRARY

January 1992

The Addendum to the Papers of Ramon Guthrie was a gift to the Dartmouth College Library from Mrs. William Yasinski of Norwich, Vermont, in 1985. This group of materials completes the Library's Guthrie Collections, and brings to light hitherto unknown writings of the well-known poet and teacher.

Born January 14, 1896 in New York City, Ramon Guthrie attended Mt. Hermon Boys' School, but left before graduating. He joined the American Field Service as an ambulance driver in 1916; when the United States entered the World War in 1917, Guthrie joined the U.S. Air Service. He rose to become a 2nd Lieutenant and Squadron Leader of the 11th Aero Squadron, 1st Day Bombardment Group, and was awarded the Silver Star and several citations for bravery. It was during his term of service in France with the AFS and Air Service that Guthrie acquired his life-long love of that country. After the war, he earned his Licence en Droit (1921) and Doctorat en Droit (1922) at the University of Toulouse; also in 1922, he married a Frenchwoman, Marguerite Maurey.

After his return to the United States, Guthrie was an Assistant Professor of Romance Languages at the University of Arizona from 1923-1926. He published a book of poems, Trobar Clus, in 1926, and again living in France, published two novels, Marcabrun and Parachute, another book of poems, A World Too Old, and a translation of The Revolutionary Spirit, by Bernard Fay.

In 1930, Guthrie was appointed Assistant Professor of French at Dartmouth College, and in 1938 he was promoted to full Professor. Aside from articles and reviews, his only published work during those years was a chapbook entitled Scherzo To The Proud City (1938). In 1942 he collaborated with another Dartmouth professor, George E. Diller, on an anthology entitled French Literature and Thought, and in 1947, published translations of The Republic of Silence, by A. J. Liebling, and L'Univers Concentrationaire, by Rousset. Not until 1959 did he publish another book of poems, Graffiti. Ramon Guthrie retired from teaching in 1963; Asbestos Phoenix appeared in 1968, and Guthrie received an NEA award for his poem, “Cantata for Saint Budoc's Day,” the same year.

Ramon Guthrie's greatest recognition came in 1970 after the publication of his long poem, Maximum Security Ward. Written while he was hospitalized and seriously ill from cancer treatments, Maximum Security Ward is generally considered to be Guthrie's most powerful work. He received the Marjorie Peabody Waite Award of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and in 1971 Dartmouth College recognized Guthrie's achievements with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree. He died November 22, 1973 in Hanover, New Hampshire.

The Addendum to the Papers of Ramon Guthrie occupies 7 boxes or approximately 10 linear feet of shelf space. The materials include biographical information, estate records for both the Ramon and Marguerite Guthrie estates, articles, pamphlets, photographs, teaching materials, published work, artwork, reviews, and unpublished manuscripts of books, poems, plays and short stories. No restrictions have been placed on the use of any of the materials in the Addendum. Photocopying will be done at the discretion of Special Collections staff, up to a maximum of 200 pages.

Further information concerning Ramon Guthrie may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
