INTRODUCTION

The papers of Richard Hovey, a graduate of Dartmouth College, Class of 1885, were acquired by the Dartmouth College Library as gifts of his son, Julian Hovey, Edwin Osgood Grover, Class of 1894, and others. The material of this once-noted poet, who wrote Men of Dartmouth, consists of correspondence, manuscripts, and newspaper clippings. The correspondence includes letters from his close friends, Bliss Carman, 1861-1929, and Thomas Buford Meteyard, 1865-1928, as well as many to and from his mother and his wife, the former Henriette Russell, a pupil of Delsarte. Having introduced Maurice Maeterlinck, 1862-1949, to the American public by translating this Belgian writer's work into English, RH had received some letters and manuscripts from him which are also to be found with these papers.

This collection is housed in 14 boxes utilizing approximately 10 linear shelf feet. Additional materials relating to Richard Hovey, family, and friends are catalogued as individual items in Special Collections.
