INTRODUCTION

The Papers of Clyde E. Dankert came to the Dartmouth College Library in 1983, the gift of Mrs. Betty Dankert. A Professor Emeritus of the College, Dankert retired from the Dartmouth faculty in 1966 after a long and distinguished career as an economist and teacher. His papers not only form a valuable record of his life and career, but also make available his varied researches in the fields of Economics and local history.

Clyde Edward Dankert was born January 28, 1901 in Hepworth, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in Hanover, Ontario, attended schools there, and entered McMaster University in 1922. He received his B.A. degree in 1926, and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago in 1927 and 1930 respectively. Also in 1930, Dankert joined the Dartmouth College faculty, becoming a full professor in 1940. He published several books on Economics and Labor, and two on the life of the so-called Scottish “father of Economics,” Adam Smith, as well as many articles. Dankert's opinion, particularly in labor matters, was widely respected; he served as an arbitrator in several union grievance cases, and was chief editor of an IRRA volume, Hours of Work, published in 1965. He served the College as Chairman of the Economics Department from 1949-1953, and as Chairman of the Social Sciences division of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences from 1963-1965.

After his retirement, Dankert became interested in local history, including that of the College. He was President of the Hanover Historical Society for several years, and was much in demand as a public speaker. Included in this collection are many of the articles he wrote on a wide variety of historical topics. He continued to write for other fields too, however, and in 1974, Adam Smith: Man of Letters and Economist, was published. In 1976, Dankert received an honorary LLD degree from his alma mater, McMaster University. Clyde Dankert died in 1982.

The Clyde Dankert Papers occupy 10 boxes, or approximately 12.5 linear shelf feet. The materials consist of correspondence, published and unpublished articles, book manuscripts, clippings, notes, photographs, family papers and college course work, including theses. Use of the collection is unrestricted.

Three groups of papers within the collection are of particular interest to scholars. The first group of materials consists of Dankert's research and writings on the life of Adam Smith. Another, and larger, section of the collection is made up of articles, notes and other source materials on the twin topics of Dartmouth College and Hanover history. Finally, a small number of folders contain photocopies and carbons of Dankert's correspondence with noted Canadian artists Lawren Harris and Carl Schaefer. (Originals of this correspondence are in the Public Archives of Canada.)

Further information concerning Clyde Dankert may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
