INTRODUCTION

The Dartmouth College Library received the papers of James P. Breeden, Dean of the William Jewett Tucker Foundation at Dartmouth College, in 1985. Dean Breeden's career prior to his appointment at the College is well documented in this extensive and very important collection.

James P. Breeden was born October 14, 1934, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and graduated from Dartmouth in 1956. He attended Union Theological Seminary in New York and was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1960. He received his doctorate from Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1972. Dean Breeden's career has spanned civil rights activism, education, and the ministry; this collection of his papers places heavy emphasis on his activities in two of these areas, civil rights and education.

Breeden was appointed Associate Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School in 1969. Since then, his career in the field of education has led him from the Boston Public Schools, where he was Executive Director of the Citywide Coordinating Council from 1976-1978 and Senior Officer in the Office of Planning and Policy from 1978-1982, to positions in several universities, including the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He was appointed Dean of the Tucker Foundation in 1984.

James Breeden's interest in civil rights activism began in 1961, when he was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi while seeking restaurant service in a local bus terminal. He has worked with several civil rights organizations, including the Episcopal Society for Racial and Cultural Unity (ESCRU) to fight racial discrimination within the Episcopal Church. Breeden's role as Executive Director of the Citywide Coordinating Council in Boston brought him into the heart of the turbulent struggle over desegregation of the public schools in that city. Since coming to the College, Dean Breeden has been active and outspoken in the anti-apartheid movement on the campus and in the nation.

The Breeden collection occupies 26 boxes, or approximately 32.5 linear feet of shelf space. The papers consist of correspondence, pamphlets, research papers, reports, speeches, proposals, student papers, theses, books, magazines and clippings. There are no materials pertaining to the Tucker Foundation in this collection, nor does it contain the complete archives of the Citywide Coordinating Council. The bulk of those archives were housed at Boston College upon termination of the Council in 1978.

Further information concerning James P. Breeden may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
