The Papers of Genevieve Taggard were given to the Dartmouth College Library over a period of years, by Miss Taggard and her husband, Kenneth Durant. Gifts of single poems in manuscript form are recorded as early as 1938, and a substantial donation of manuscripts, books, and other publications was made in 1946. After Taggard's death, Kenneth Durant put most of the papers described in this guide on deposit in Special Collections; in 1970, Library records show that he gave these materials to the Library. Recently the decision was made to separate the manuscripts from the book collection, and to reorganize the papers for more efficient access by scholars.
Genevieve Taggard was born November 28, 1894 in Waitsburg, Washington. At the age of two, she was taken to Hawaii by her missionary parents. Her Hawaiian youth is clearly reflected in much of Taggard's poetry. In 1919, Genevieve Taggard received her A.B. degree from the University of California, where she had been a contributor to the University's literary magazine, The Occident. She married Robert Wolf in 1921, and the following year published her first book of poetry, For Eager Lovers.
During the remaining twenty-six years of her life, Taggard published thirteen other books of verse, and was editor or co-editor of five anthologies. She taught poetry courses at Mt. Holyoke, Bennington, and Sarah Lawrence Colleges, and was active in social causes. In 1935, she married Kenneth Durant, and they established a summer home, “Gilfeather,” in East Jamaica, Vermont. Genevieve Taggard died in November 1948.
The Genevieve Taggard Collection consists of poetry and prose manuscripts, both published and unpublished, clippings, pamphlets, correspondence, catalogue cards, and book manuscripts. The materials occupy 8 boxes, or approximately 10 linear feet of shelf space. Perhaps the most useful part of the collection is the card catalogue. During the years 1948 to approximately 1955, Kenneth Durant worked with Library staff to collect and record on cards every known item pertaining to Genevieve Taggard. Although the catalogue is flawed and incomplete (for example, there are no cards for unpublished material), it is still a mine of information for scholars. Publication information, names of correspondents, lists of reviews, and a chronology of published work may be found there. The “first line” catalogue is an excellent cross-reference tool when used with the poetry title catalogue, since many poems were retitled more than once. The catalogue cards are boxed as originally arranged.
No restrictions have been placed on the use of any of the Taggard papers; however, due to the age and fragility of some of the materials, photocopying will be done at the discretion of Special Collections staff. Further information concerning Genevieve Taggard may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
