Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966), painter and illustrator. Consist of personal and professional papers and correspondence, posters, prints, sketches and proofs as well as glass plate negatives documenting the life and work of Maxfield Parrish and his family.

Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Maxfield Parrish contain personal and professional correspondence, prints, posters, sketches and proofs, articles, diaries, clippings, financial information, sketches, exhibit catalogues and record books, documenting the life and work of Maxfield Parrish and his family. A large collection of glass plate negatives of his family, work and of the Cornish, NH area are also included.

Biography

Maxfield Parrish was born on July 25, 1870, in Philadelphia, PA. He attended Haverford College from 1888-1891 and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1892-1894. His received first commission, a mural of 'Old King Cole" from the Mask and Wig Club of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1894. The following year he married Lydia Austin and accepted his first assignment to design a magazine cover for "Harper's Bazaar." In 1897, he illustrated "Mother Goose in Prose" by Frank L. Baum. In 1898, Parrish began construction of a house in Cornish " The Oaks, " where he lived and worked, illustrating books, magazines and advertising posters. He also created paintings for calendars and greeting cards, including landscapes for Brown and Bigelow of St. Paul, Minnesota. Parrish died on March 30, 1966 at the age of 96.
