INTRODUCTION

The Dartmouth College Library has been, over a period of several years, the recipient of the papers of Henry B. Williams, a major donation by Mrs. Rebecca Williams. A former Professor of English and Drama at the College, Williams, who died in 1987, gave 41 years of service to Dartmouth, and is memorialized by the establishment of the Henry B. Williams/E. Bradlee Watson Theatre Collection in Baker Library's Special Collections. This body of personal papers is both an important historical record of drama at Dartmouth and an enthusiastic glimpse into the theatre of many times and nations.

Henry B. Williams was born August 30, 1907, in Philadelphia. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art in 1928, and went on to study under George Pierce Baker at the Yale Drama School. In 1931, Williams joined the Dartmouth College faculty as an instructor in the English Department; he also served as designer and technical director for the Dartmouth Players. During World War II, he joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, became an expert in camouflage design, and was discharged with the rank of Captain. Returning to the College in 1946, Williams was appointed Director of the Experimental Theatre. He received his Adjunct in Arts degree from Harvard in 1947, for work done during summer sessions, and was awarded an MFA from Yale in 1948. He was promoted to full professor and granted tenure in 1950.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Henry Williams travelled widely in Europe and Japan, studying the theatre traditions of several countries. He became fascinated with the Noh, Kabuki and Bunraku traditional theatres of Japan, and brought back the knowledge and materials to start a course in Japanese theatre at Dartmouth. In 1962 he supervised the first drama majors at Dartmouth, and helped create a separate Drama Department in 1967. Williams was prominent in several professional organizations; he was President of the American Educational Theatre Association in 1967-1968, and was elected a member of that body's College of Fellows in 1969. He directed a symposium on the American theatre for the American College Theatre Festival in 1969, and in 1971 became President of the National Association of Schools of Theatre. He was a member of the American National Theatre and Academy, the American Society for Theatre Research, and the New England Theatre Conference. Williams retired from Dartmouth College in 1972.

Henry Williams' interest in teaching and in theatre never waned. He returned to Dartmouth in 1973 to teach a course in the American theatre, and also taught briefly at the University of Connecticut, Smith College, and Purdue University in Indiana. He kept up his professional connections, and in 1978 he received the American Theatre Association's Award of Merit for distinguished service to educational theatre. He researched and wrote articles on early theatre at Dartmouth for the Dartmouth College Library Bulletin (later published in book form), and in 1983, he was honored by the dedication of the Williams/Watson Theatre Collection. Henry Williams died in 1987; his book, Theatre at Dartmouth 1769-1914 was published posthumously.

The Papers of Henry B. Williams occupy 14 boxes, or approximately 15.0 linear shelf feet. The collection consists chiefly of correspondence, articles, papers, theatre programs, clippings, lectures, scripts, sketches, photographs, pamphlets, newsletters, and books. The largest group of materials in the collection are those having to do with Williams' service with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in World War II. In addition to personal, family letters and letters written to Williams by soldiers “in the field,” there is a wide range of pamphlets, books, maps and charts dealing with camouflage work in all parts of the world. Another large section, entitled Teaching Career, is made up largely of lectures that clearly illustrate Williams' interest in any and all forms of theatre. Former students, like Robert Montgomery, Michael Moriarty, David Birney and Buck Henry, theatre luminaries such as Lynn Fontanne, Peggy Wood and Blanche Yurka, friends such as actor Alan Hewitt and Arthur and Lillie Mayer are represented in the section on Special Correspondents.

In addition to this collection, Special Collections holds many theatre programs, scene designs and costume sketches donated to the Williams/Watson Theatre Collection by Henry Williams and, later, by Mrs. Rebecca Williams. A small collection of tapes, mostly of performances of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, will be catalogued separately. Further information concerning Henry B. Williams and the Williams/Watson Theatre Collection may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.

Addendum to the Papers of Henry B. Williams in the Dartmouth College Library

February 1995

The Dartmouth College Library received the materials that make up the Addendum to the Papers of Henry B. Williams as gifts, some from Rebecca Williams in 1990, and the remainder from her estate in 1991. The Addendum completes the Williams collection and furnishes further information on the life and work of a remarkable teacher and scholar.

Henry Beates Williams was born August 30, 1907 in Philadelphia. Educated at the William Penn Charter School and the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art, he came to Dartmouth in 1931 as an instructor in the English Dept. He also served as designer and technical director for the Dartmouth Players. After serving in the armed forces (1942-1946), Williams returned to Dartmouth and became Director of the Experimental Theatre. He married Rebecca Gallagher in 1943.

Williams received his Adjunct in Arts degree from Harvard in 1947, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale in 1948. He was promoted to full, tenured Professor of English at Dartmouth in 1950. His enthusiasm for all forms of theatre led to several trips abroad to study both ancient and modern drama, including three trips to Japan in the 1960's to study the traditional Noh, Kabuki and Bunraku forms of Japanese drama. Williams retired from Dartmouth College in 1972 after 41 years of service.

Williams guided the theatrical footsteps of such theatre and film luminaries as Alan Hewitt, who went directly from the Dartmouth stage to working with Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontanne on the New York stage, Buck Henry, Michael Moriarty, David Birney, and playwright Frank Gilroy. He remained a friend and mentor to them, and to many others whose career paths led them far away from theatre, until his death in 1987.

The Addendum to the Papers of Henry B. Williams occupies 6 boxes, or approximately 7.5 linear feet of shelf space. The materials consist of articles, clippings, correspondence, pamphlets, reports, theatre programs, photographs, papers, and many other items. The largest body of materials in the collection concerns Dartmouth College, particularly the Dartmouth faculty, from the late 1940's to the early 1960's. Of particular interest are the Faculty Bulletins and the many reports of the various faculty committees that oversaw the different aspects of the College. The materials under the heading Plant Development Committee, are also of special interest. They concern the work of the Trustees' Planning Committee of the 1950's, which was planning for the needs of the college for the “next” 50 years--which are now almost over, and the Trustees and administration of the 90's are also planning ahead for another 50 years. the contrast, and the continuum, are striking.

In an era when publish-or-perish was not as prominent in the life of a college professor as it is today, Henry Williams was not a prolific writer. However, some of his articles and lectures appear in the final section of the Addendum, Writings, and they are remarkable for their depth of research and clarity of thought. Between 1980 and 1987, he published several articles in the Dartmouth College Library Bulletin on early theatre at Dartmouth. In 1987, the Friends of the Dartmouth Library gathered those articles together into a book, Theatre at Dartmouth 1769-1914, published shortly after Williams' death.

Further information concerning Henry B. Williams or the theatre may be found in Special Collections and its Williams/Watson Theatre Collection, in the Dartmouth College Library.
