INTRODUCTION

The Papers of Rod Alexander were received by the Dartmouth College Library in 1986, as a gift from Mr. Alexander. With the donation of his personal papers to the College, Rod Alexander has joined a growing number of theatre notables, (Alan Hewitt and David Birney, for example), who have provided for the disposition of their papers at Dartmouth. In addition, Mr. Alexander has been most generous in donating many books, plays, and scripts to further enrich Dartmouth's Theatre Collection.

Born April 23, 1919 in Spokane, Washington, Rod Alexander received his A.B. degree in Music from Whitman College, Walla Walla, Washington, in 1941. Following service in the Naval Air Corps (1941-1946), and his marriage to Marilyn Maxey (1942), Alexander was appointed Director of Theatre at Whitman College (1948). He designed and helped build the first Whitman Theatre out of an old army barracks, established a drama major, and designed the curriculum. Alexander received his A.M. degree in Drama from Columbia University in 1953.

In addition to his duties at Whitman, Rod Alexander was in demand as an actor and guest director. He directed plays for regional and college theatre companies in such diverse locations as Ashland, Oregon (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), Marshall, Minnesota, University of California at Berkeley and Santa Barbara, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Baltimore, Maryland, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He also performed in many plays, both classical and contemporary.

In 1967, Alexander was appointed Director of Theatre at Dartmouth College, and helped to create the Drama Department the following year. He successfully directed the Summer Repertory Company for many seasons, and brought the Dartmouth Players to national prominence. In 1970, The Ghost Sonata, under Alexander's direction, opened at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., as Dartmouth's entry in the American College Theatre Festival. The following year, Alexander and the Players brought e.e. cummings' him to the Washington Festival; him was later taped for public broadcast by the New Hampshire Network. Rod Alexander continued to direct plays for other theatre companies, to act, conduct acting and directing workshops in the New England region, and remained active in professional theatre organizations. He retired from Dartmouth College in 1985, and continues to live in Orford, New Hampshire.

The Papers of Rod Alexander occupy 9 boxes, or approximately 11.5 linear feet of shelf space. The collection consists of correspondence, brochures, plays, pamphlets, scripts, programs, photographs and resumes of summer applicants, papers, proposals, reports, budget materials for both the Drama Department and the Summer Repertory Company, clippings, biographical data, and much more. Parts of the collection particularly rich in interest include those on the Drama Department, Summer Repertory, and Guest Directing.

No restrictions have been placed on the use of any of the materials in the collection. Photocopying, up to a maximum of 200 pages, will be done at the discretion of Special Collections staff. Further information concerning Rod Alexander may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
