INTRODUCTION

The Dartmouth College Library received the Papers of David Butler '63 as a gift from Mr. Butler in 1989. This important body of papers, focussing on the last days of the American presence in Vietnam, will be of exceptional value to scholars as we continue to struggle to understand the impact of the Vietnam War on our society.

David Butler was born June 18, 1941 in Wakefield, Massachusetts. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1963. He worked for the McGraw-Hill Book Company as a supervising editor, then, in 1966, became a reporter for the Claremont (NH) Daily Eagle. Later that year, Butler took an editing job at Playboy magazine. It was while working for Playboy that David Butler made his first two visits to Vietnam (1971 and 1973).

He returned to Vietnam in late 1974, working as a stringer for NBC News. He was an eyewitness to the last few months of the war, and as one of the last journalists airlifted from Saigon, to the evacuation of Americans and Vietnamese from Saigon in the last days of April 1975. After stints in Bangkok and New York, working for NBC radio and Newsweek magazine, David Butler moved to Washington, D.C., in 1982 to begin researching and writing a book about his experiences in Vietnam. The Fall of Saigon was published in 1985 by Simon & Schuster, and the following year, was published as a Dell paperback. David Butler currently lives in Bangkok, and is a journalist and freelance writer.

The Papers of David Butler occupy 7 boxes, or approximately 10.0 linear feet of shelf space. The materials consist of articles, the manuscript of The Fall of Saigon, correspondence, interview notes and transcripts, newspapers, magazines, maps, reports, clippings and photographs. Mr. Butler's reference library of books on Vietnam, included in the gift, will be housed elsewhere in the Library.

Parts of the collection of particular interest include the sections entitled Book Mss and Interviews. The book manuscript of The Fall of Saigon is an exceptionally fine example of the many steps involved in writing, editing and publishing a book. Everything from the book proposal through the outline, first draft, revisions, edited manuscript and index to the galley proofs has been carefully preserved.

David Butler interviewed many people, both Americans and Vietnamese, while researching the book. The notes and transcripts of those interviews, along with supporting material from many of the interviewees, form the most fascinating part of the collection. A wide range of persons, including such notables as Ambassador Graham Martin, Nguyen Cao Ky, Dr. Meritt Stark and General John E. Murray (Ret.), tell the story of the evacuation of Saigon as each of them, personally, saw it happen. It is a rich source of eyewitness history.

No restrictions have been placed on the use of any of the materials in this collection. Photocopying, up to a maximum of 200 pages, may be done at the discretion of Special Collections staff. Further information concerning David Butler may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
