INTRODUCTION

The Dartmouth College Library received the Papers of Justin A. Stanley as a 1990-1992 gift from Mr. Stanley. A Class of 1933 alumnus and College benefactor, Justin Stanley is also a highly respected lawyer whose career in the law has spanned more than 50 years. Honored by many prestigious individuals and organizations for his service to his profession and to his fellow man, Justin Stanley epitomizes the highest type of legal professional.

Born January 2, 1911 in Leesburg, Indiana, Justin Stanley graduated from Dartmouth College in 1933, and from Columbia University Law School in 1937. He joined the firm of Isham, Lincoln and Beale in Chicago the same year, and in 1938, he married Helen Leigh Fletcher. Except for his service as a Naval lieutenant (1944-1946) during the war, and a two-year leave of absence (1952-1954) while he served as Vice President of Dartmouth College, Justin Stanley remained with the Isham, Lincoln and Beale firm for thirty years.

In 1967, Stanley joined the firm of Mayer, Brown and Platt, Chicago, and was elected President of the Chicago Bar Association the same year. His involvement in American Bar Association activities deepened during the early 1970's; he accepted membership in the House of Delegates in 1972, and was a member or chairman of a number of ABA committees. He became President of the ABA in 1976, and, as a Past President, has since kept up his service to the organization, culminating in his chairmanship of the ABA Commission on Professionalism (1985-1986). Stanley was awarded the ABA Medal in 1986 by his grateful colleagues.

In addition to Justin Stanley's interest in the law, he has long been a patron of education, giving both time and financial support to a wide variety of educational institutions. He has been a trustee of both Wells College, Aurora, New York, and Rockford College, Rockford, Illinois; has been on the Visiting Committee of the University of Chicago Law School, the Board of Overseers of ITT Chicago-Kent College of Law and the Board of Visitors of Columbia University Law School. Mr. Stanley was President of the Dartmouth Alumni Council in 1952, as well as a Vice President of the College, and in 1938-1946, taught part-time at Chicago-Kent College of Law.

Justin Stanley also found time for community service. Among other activities, he has been a Board Member and President of the Illinois Children's Home and Aid Society, a member of the Police Board of the City of Chicago, Chairman of the Assessor's Commission to Study the Property Tax in Cook County, and a member of the Steering Committee of the Governor's Task Force on Judicial Merit Selection. He and Mrs. Stanley have supported the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the work of Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center.

On a national stage, Mr. Stanley became a trustee of the Supreme Court Historical Society in 1984, and served as the Society's President from 1986-1991. During his tenure as President, he initiated a successful endowment campaign to raise $2.5 million to ensure the continuation of the Society's programs to preserve the Court's history and to educate the public about the work of the U.S. Supreme Court.

In recognition of Justin Stanley's services to the law and humanity, he has been the recipient of the Learned Hand Humanitarian Award of the American Jewish Committee (1978), the Medal For Excellence from Columbia University Law School (1984), the ABA Medal (1986), and the Illinois Bar Foundation Distinguished Service Award (1986). He has received honorary degrees from numerous colleges and universities, including Dartmouth College (1983) and ITT Chicago-Kent College of Law (1988). Now retired from the practice of law, Justin Stanley resides in Wilmette, Illinois.

The Papers of Justin A. Stanley occupy 17 boxes, or approximately 20.5 linear shelf feet. The papers are composed of articles, clippings, correspondence, speeches, reports, pamphlets, oral history tapes, minutes of meetings, proposals and a variety of other materials. The section entitled American Bar Association contains a typescript diary detailing Stanley's activities and travels during his year as ABA President, and there is an excellent collection of his speeches as President and President-Elect at the end of the section.

The part of the collection entitled Commission on Professionalism brings to the fore the questions of ethics and professional responsibility. The Commission on Professionalism, headed by Justin Stanley, found that professionalism in the legal community has taken a downturn in recent years. The Commission's Report, along with its supporting materials, make interesting reading for those concerned with ethics in modern professional life.

The Supreme Court Historical Society materials are an important part of the collection. Begun in 1974 by former Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, the Society exists to preserve Court history and to help educate the American people about the Court's role in American life. This section of the papers contains articles and reminiscences about former Justices, Society publications, correspondence, pamphlets, reports and papers that help to explain the Society's mission.

No restrictions have been placed on any of the materials in this collection. Photocopying, up to a limit of 200 pages, will be done by Special Collections staff. Further information concerning Justin Stanley may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
