INTRODUCTION

Samuel Colcord Bartlett, Jr., son of the eighth president of Dartmouth College, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 21, 1865. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1887, Bartlett embarked on the first of four extended missionary trips to Japan. During his career, he earned a divinity degree from Andover Theological Seminary and was awarded a number of honorary degrees. Bartlett's work both as a missionary in Japan and as a member of the faculty of Doshisha University in Kyoto placed him in a position to influence higher education in Japan for nearly forty years. As a consequence, this collection is of great interest for researchers studying Japanese social life and customs and Japanese higher education at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. Bartlett retired from his teaching posts at Doshisha University in 1935 and died in Norwich, Vermont, on February 1, 1937.

The collection contains diaries, correspondence, photographs and printed material. Of particular interest is the long series of letters between Bartlett and his family and between Bartlett and his students. Also of note are a series of sermons preached by Bartlett while serving as a minister in Rhode Island. The photographs in the collection are an important resource for the study of Japan during this period.

Researchers using this collection should be aware of the materials in the papers of Bartlett's father, President Samuel Colcord Bartlett (DP-8), and his daughter, Agnes Vernon Bartlett (ML-43).

The papers of Samuel Colcord Bartlett, Jr., were acquired as a gift of the Friends of the Library in 1992. The collection is housed in 7 containers and occupies ten linear feet of shelf space.
