BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ON: Herbert Wells Hill

Herbert Wells Hill, Professor of History, Emeritus, at Dartmouth College retired in 1967 having served since 1928 when he joined the faculty as an instructor. He became an assistant professor in 1935. Appointed full professor in 1941, he served as chairman of the Department of History from 1947 to 1953 and from 1959 to 1964, and of International Relations from 1955-1959.

Born in Andover, Massachusetts, in 1902, he graduated from Phillips Academy in 1919 and from Harvard where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1924 and his Master's degree in 1926. He has specialized in the history of U.S. foreign relations and in New England history.

Active at the state and national levels, he was chairman of the New Hampshire Committee for the Hoover Report, 1947-1958, and was a member of the Board of Governors of Atlantic Union Committee. From 1951 to 1953 he served in the State Department as a planning adviser to the Assistant Secretary for European Affairs.

Chairman of the Grafton County Democratic Committee from 1940 to 1946 and of the State Democratic Committee from 1946-1948, he ran for Governor of New Hampshire in 1948 and was narrowly defeated. He was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in the 1960 elections.

He has served on a number of state committees and commissions, including the New Hampshire Reorganization Commission, and has been a member of the State Fish and Game Commission since 1948. Professor Hill was a member of the New Hampshire Constitutional Conventions of 1948 and 1959 and in 1950 of the U.S. Assay Commission. From 1954 to 1955 he was on the New Hampshire Timber Tax Commission. He also served as a Special Justice of the Hanover, New Hampshire, District Court.

At Dartmouth, Professor Hill was Director of Hanover Holiday, the alumni education program, from 1936 through 1962 and headed the Speakers Bureau for many years. During World War II, when Dartmouth had the largest V-12 unit in the country, he was in charge of courses in Naval History.

A frequent lecturer on politics and international relations, Professor Hill has written articles and reviews on New England history. He has been a member of the American Historical Association, a director of the New Hampshire Council of World Affairs, president of the New Hampshire Historical Society, a director of the New Hampshire Social Welfare Council and a trustee of the New Hampshire Multiple Sclerosis Society.

He was appointed to the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO in 1961 and reappointed in 1963. In the fall of 1962 he was a member of the U.S. Delegation for the UNESCO General Conference in Paris, and served also as a member of the State Department Foreign Service Selection Board earlier that fall.

INTRODUCTION

The papers of Herbert Wells Hill, acquired in 1971, are contained in 19 boxes using 19 linear shelf feet. They include material on his education; teaching career at Dartmouth College, from 1928 when he joined the faculty as an Instructor until his appointment as Professor Emeritus; political activities and campaigning, as in 1960 when he ran for U. S. Senate; and membership and positions held in several organizations such as UNESCO adviser. The papers cover, primarily, the period from 1919 until his retirement in 1967, although there is some information on the years through 1972. His appointments as Associate Justice in Hanover, New Hampshire, and as its Moderator of Town and School District Meetings are also covered.
