Introduction

The Dartmouth College Library acquired the Papers of James Frank Drake as the gift of his estate. An alumnus of the Class of 1902, and of the Tuck School ('03), Drake was a lifelong benefactor of the College. The Library is proud to be the repository of Drake's personal papers.

James Frank Drake was born September 1, 1880 in Pittsfield, New Hampshire. He attended local schools and Kimball Union Academy, entering Dartmouth College in 1898. While at the College, he joined Theta Delta Chi fraternity, which remained a lifelong interest. Graduating in 1902, Drake entered the Amos Tuck School of Administration and Finance, and received his degree in 1903.

Drake's first job was as Secretary of the Board of Trade (now Chamber of Commerce) in Springfield, Massachusetts. He became active in the community, sponsoring and managing the annual Dartmouth-Brown football game which he brought to Springfield in 1905 and 1906. He married Mildred Chase in 1907, and later that year was elected to the city's Common Council. He served five years, three of them as President of the Council (1910-1912). He also served on the Municipal Building Commission, which was responsible for erecting a group of civic buildings in Springfield. In 1908, Drake left the Board of Trade to accept a position at Phelps Publishing Co., rising there to the positions of Treasurer and Director of the company.

In 1918, Drake was commissioned as a Major in the U.S. Army Ordnance Dept., and sent to the Pittsburgh District Office. He was discharged in 1919, having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and remained a civilian advisor until the Claims Board completed its work of settling cancelled contracts in December of 1919.

Drake became Assistant to the President of the Gulf Oil Corporation in July, 1919. Two years later he took a leave of absence to become the confidential aide of Secretary of the Treasury Andrew W. Mellon. In 1923, Drake accepted the presidency of Standard Steel Car Company and its related subsidiaries, a position he held until 1930, when Standard Steel merged with Pullman, Inc.; he was named Director and Chairman of the Board. He resigned in 1931 to accept the presidency of Gulf Oil Corporation, where he served until 1948, when he became Chairman of the Board and later, in 1953, Chairman of the Executive Committee. He ceased to be an officer of the corporation in 1955, retaining his positions on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee until 1959, when he was named Director Emeritus.

During his later years, Drake travelled extensively and pursued interests in a number of areas. He was a major contributor of both time and money to the College, including Theta Delta Chi fraternity and the Tuck School. He returned to Pittsfield in 1966, to live in the Drake family home. There, he was instrumental in the upkeep of the Drake Athletic Field and the town cemetery, started an historical society, co-sponsored a published town history and a War Memorial, and set up a scholarship fund for Pittsfield students who might attend Dartmouth College. Drake also pursued his long-time interests in philately and book collecting.

James Frank Drake died December 30, 1976.

The Drake collection occupies 13 boxes, or approximately 17.5 linear feet of shelf space. The materials consist of articles, clippings, correspondence, class assignments, photographs, pamphlets, reports, books, proposals, and many other items. The largest group of materials within the collection are the Dartmouth-related papers. Drake's devotion to Dartmouth led him to become a charter member of the Alumni Council (1913-1917), to be Vice President and President of the Alumni Association, and to membership and officer status in several Dartmouth clubs, as well as the presidency of the Class of 1902 (1973). He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1952, and was the recipient of the Alumni Award for Distinguished Service and the Theta Delta Chi Achievement Award in 1958. In addition, the Drake Room in the Hopkins Center was named for him.

Another group of materials that deserves mention is the Drake family folders. Primarily correspondence, the letters record daily life in New Hampshire in the early years of the twentieth century. The letters of Nathaniel Drake to James Frank Drake, for example, record the political events of his time, as well as agricultural trends and real estate prices. This group of materials complements MS-664, Drake Family Correspondence, arranged separately.

There are no restrictions on the use of any of the materials in the James Frank Drake collection. Special Collections staff members reserve the right not to photocopy fragile materials, and to limit the number of photocopies.
