Introduction

The Dartmouth College Library received the Papers of Hugh Meade Alcorn, Jr., in 1997, the gift of Mrs. Marcia Alcorn. Some of Alcorn's papers had been on deposit in the Library for several years previous to 1997, and were included in the gift. The materials that make up the collection are exclusively concerned with the years that Meade Alcorn served as Chairman of the Republican National Committee during the second Eisenhower Administration (1957-1959).

Born October 20, 1907 in Suffield, Connecticut, Meade Alcorn graduated from Dartmouth College in 1930, and from Yale Law School in 1933. Admitted to the bar that same year, he joined his father's law firm, Alcorn, Bakewell & Smith, becoming Senior partner on the elder Alcorn's retirement in 1938. Alcorn's political career began in 1937, when he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives. He served the Republican Party in Connecticut as Chairman of the Suffield Republican Town Committee, Floor Leader of the House, Speaker of the House, and as a delegate, several times over, to the Republican National Convention. He ran, unsuccessfully, for Lieutenant Governor in 1948.

Also in 1948, Alcorn became a member of the Connecticut Republican State Central Committee, and in 1953, a member of the Republican National Committee. By 1955 he was Vice Chairman of the National Committee, and when his predecessor, Leonard Hall, resigned in 1957, Alcorn accepted President Eisenhower's offer of the Chairmanship. Even after his own resignation in 1959, Alcorn retained his interest in politics; he was General Counsel to the National Committee until 1961, and in 1965, served as Republican Floor Leader at Connecticut's Constitutional Convention. After acting as New England Regional Coordinator for Nelson Rockefeller's failed Presidential campaign in 1968, Meade Alcorn returned to the practice of law. In 1983, he merged Alcorn, Bakewell & Smith with another law firm to form Tyler, Cooper & Alcorn; he retired in 1989. Meade Alcorn died January 13, 1992 in Suffield, Connecticut.

The Meade Alcorn Papers are housed in 8 boxes, which occupy 10.0 linear feet of shelf space. The papers are accompanied by approximately 7.0 linear feet of index cards, which are used to access the correspondence in the collection. The materials themselves consist of correspondence, clippings, newsletters, pamphlets, reports, proposals, financial records, news releases, and many other items. Topics of particular interest include the categories on Agriculture, Labor, Meetings (of the National Committee), and for insight into the inner workings of the national office, Republican National Committee memos.

The index cards used to access the collection are arranged by year, and within the year, alphabetically by name of correspondent. A subject category number is also typed on the card. Once having located the name you wish to access, find the subject category number and cross reference it with the guide to the papers. Thus, if you want to find 1957, Smith, Mrs. G. Abbott, 30: Mailing Lists, you would look for Category 30:Mailing Lists in the Table of Contents, and turn to the page number listed. Find the correspondence files in that category; Mrs G. Abbott Smith is filed alphabetically in Box 6, Folder 22, 1957 M-Z. The Library does not have subject categories of papers other than those listed in the guide, though many others are indicated on the index cards.

No restrictions have been placed on any of the papers in the Meade Alcorn collection. Photocopying may be done at the discretion of Special Collections staff. Further information concerning Meade Alcorn may be found in Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
