Introduction

The Dartmouth College Library acquired the Papers of Morton M. Kondracke in 1995, as a gift from Mr. Kondracke. A 1960 graduate of the College, Mr. Kondracke's journalism career is ongoing, and this fine small collection may be expected to grow with time.

Morton M. Kondracke was born April 28, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1960, and joined the Army, where he spent the next three years in the Intelligence Division, stationed in Washington, D.C. He did graduate work at Georgetown University, and worked part-time for The Washington Star. After his discharge in 1964, Kondracke joined the staff of the Chicago Sun-Times. He and Millicent Martinez were married in 1967. He remained at the Sun-Times until 1976, rising from general interest reporter to White House correspondent, and garnering several writing awards along the way. He also spent time as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1973-1974.

Kondracke accepted the position of executive editor at The New Republic in 1977. As his name gained recognition, new opportunities came his way: political commentator on National Public Radio's Communique and All Things Considered; a column for The Wall Street Journal; a spot as panelist on The McLaughlin Group program on PBS; and a contract to write a twice-weekly syndicated column from the United Features Syndicate. He left The New Republic in 1985 to become Washington Bureau Chief of Newsweek Magazine, but was back at The New Republic as Senior Editor in less than two years. He also took on duties as host of American Interests, public television's foreign affairs program. He was granted an exclusive interview with former President Richard M. Nixon for an American Interests special in 1990. Since 1992, Morton Kondracke has been Executive Editor of Roll Call, the newspaper of Capitol Hill, and has continued his duties as editor, television commentator and panelist, and as the host of American Interests.

The Morton Kondracke collection occupies nine (9) boxes, or approximately 16.25 linear feet of shelf space. The materials consist of articles, correspondence, clippings, photographs, newsletters, news releases, research material, transcripts, video-and audiocassettes, speeches, scrapbooks, and many other items. There is quite a complete record of articles written by Kondracke for The New Republic and The Wall Street Journal, and both the scrapbooks and the clippings files cover the Watergate years he spent at the Chicago Sun-Times. The correspondence files are also of particular interest, the letters ranging from complimentary to obscene and vicious, especially those commenting on Kondracke's participation in The McLaughlin Group program.

None of the materials in the collection have been restricted by the donor. However, copyright law may preclude the copying of certain materials. Patrons should consult the appropriate curator for permission to make copies of questionable materials. Further information concerning Morton Kondracke may be found in the Rauner Special Collections Library in Webster Hall.
