Frank J. Barrett, Jr. (1953-). Architect. Contains original and reproduction photographs and negatives of rural Hanover, Etna, and Lyme NH as well as Dartmouth College. The photos show architectural and landscape views of the Hanover area. Also included is a report of Hanover's Sewer System.

The materials represented in this guide may be accessed through the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College. Rauner Library is located in Webster Hall. The materials must be used on-site and may not leave Rauner Library.

Introduction to the Collection

The Frank Barrett collection contains historic photographs (both original and reproductions), negatives, and color slides of houses, buildings, landscapes, streetscapes, schools, people and events in the Hanover, Etna and Lyme, NH area. Most of the photographs were used in Mr. Barrett's pictorial publications on the history of Hanover, NH. Also included is a report of Hanover's Sewer System. A December 2008 addition contained negatives and prints that Barrett purchased from the Pierce photographic studio in Hanover. These images document Dartmouth buildings, college life and functions from circa 1930-1965.

Biography

Frank J. Barrett, Jr. (1953-). Architect. Born in Hanover, NH. A 1971 graduate of Hanover High School. Trained in engineering at the Wentworth Institute in Boston, Ma. A resident of Fairlee, Vermont with an office located in White River Junction, Vermont. Barrett has authored two pictorial histories of Hanover published in 1997 and 1998; and a third released in June 2008.

Contains photographs of Hanover's Fire Chief; construction fields of the building of the first and second Hanover Reservoirs; images depicting the raising of the level of the Hanover Reservoir; Trumbull's house in Etna, NH; images used in Barrett's 1998 book "Hanover NH, vol. II" and negatives of Hanover Maps from 1835.

Contains photographs and negatives of Hanover, NH; Lewsiton, Norwich, Union Village, Wilder, Pompanoosuc, and Newberry, Vermont towns. Of note is a large panoramic negative of the Hanover Green looking North from the Inn. Most photos and negatives are not originals, but document scenes from the 1920's and 30's.
