Abstract:

John Hurd (1899-1978 ) Dartmouth Class of 1921, and professor of English at Dartmouth. Contains personal and professional correspondence (much of it related to members of the Dartmouth Class of 1921), photographs, newspaper and magazine clippings, programs, diaries and English papers and exams.

The materials represented in this guide may be accessed through the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College. Rauner Library is located in Webster Hall. The materials must be used on-site and may not leave Rauner Library.

Rauner Special Collections Library is open to the public and in most cases no appointment is necessary. The exception is in the case of materials stored off site for which there may be a delay of up to 48 hours in retrieval. Introduction to the Collection

The papers of John Hurd contains personal and professional correspondence (much of it related to members of the Dartmouth Class of 1921), photographs, newspaper and magazine clippings, receipts, programs, diaries and English papers and exams from Dartmouth College English Professor John Hurd. Hurd's personal diaries span the years 1941-1969.

Biography

John Hurd (1899-1978) Professor of English at Dartmouth College (1927-1964). Further study at Oxford (B.S. and MA 1927, 1932) and Harvard (AM, 1924). Specialist in 18th C. English literature. Worked briefly as a reporter and copy editor for the Boston Globe. Served in Navy in WWII.

Contains files of correspondence with members of the Dartmouth College Class of 1921 and their spouses, from Hurd's time as alumni secretary of the class, each file labeled with the correspondent's name, and most of it relating to material for the alumni newsletter. Also includes some miscellaneous documents, such as records of the 1921 Memorial Books Program and deceased class members. Of note are letters to Mary Palmer detailing several articles Hurd wrote for the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine and the sale of Hurd's manuscript on early Maine doctors to "Medical Opinion and Review," a letter to Ralph Pendleton mentioning an article of Hurd's on Eleazar Wheelock.

Contains correspondence from members of the Class of 1921, organized partly alphabetically, partly by individual correspondent. Of interest are a letter to Hurd from S. Heagan Bayles regarding Hurd being given the Dartmouth Alumni Award in 1968, a commendation given by the governor of New Hampshire to William P. Fowler, a member of the Class of 1921, a review of a book written by Jeffrey P. Hart, a professor of English literature at Dartmouth and the son of a member of the Class of 1921, an editorial published by Charles Moreau, a member of the Class of 1921, correspondence with Ellis Briggs, a US ambassador and Dartmouth graduate, correspondence with US Representative Kent McKinley, a member of the Class of 1921, a Dartmouth College Library Bulletin from 1960, and letters from Hurd to various classmates detailing an article he was writing on Native Americans at Dartmouth.

Contains professional correspondence as well as personal correspondence with friends, classmates, and students, including letters from friends in Germany and other parts of Europe shortly before the outbreak of WWII (some in German), some newspaper clippings, correspondence written during WWII, a photograph, a genealogical chart, and summaries of English courses for the 1947-1948 academic year. Also contains numerous documents of the Worcester County Branch of the Woman's Board of Missions, including receipts, a receipt book, correspondence, meeting programs, annual reports, and banking records.

Contains a box of photographs, negatives and slides (largely of the Frost family), boxes of photographs and personal correspondence (largely to Mrs. John Hurd from her family), miscellaneous documents including receipts, a copy of "The Westminster Magazine," and newspaper clippings, and labeled files containing various documents, mostly literary and dramatic magazines and reviews including book reviews of George Orwell's "1984," play reviews and programs, and a Dartmouth comprehensive English examination from 1954.

Contains boxes of medical invoices, newspaper clippings, including one on the attitudes of Dartmouth professors towards Joseph McCarthy, a handwritten essay "Ups and Downs of Life (my Life)," final exams from the Dartmouth English department, a clipping from "The Dartmouth" listing the rules for the Winter Carnival weekend of 1954, receipts, personal correspondence of both John Hurd and his wife Eleanor, a copy of "Faulkner Studies," and telegrams.

Contains boxes and files of personal correspondence of John Hurd and his wife Eleanor (some of it in German), a magazine article on a search for a copy of "Hamlet" in Denmark, newspaper clippings, picture postcards of the mission of San Juan Capistrano, receipts, postcards, a file with information for freshman advisors on incoming Dartmouth freshman, as well as booklets of information for Dartmouth freshman, clippings from literary magazines, including a review of Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World," and several other clippings relating to Huxley, photographs, play programs, a copy of "The Dartmouth Quarterly," graded English papers, and a booklet on and review of Laurence Olivier's "Henry V."
