Introduction to the Collection

Series I contains general Dartmouth materials, such as pamphlets, clippings and newsletters. Series II consists of Marine V-12 materials and is made up almost exclusively of Gustafson's letters to his family, telling about his classes, Outing Club activities, and friends, except for a few items re: Class of 1948 50th Reunion. Series III, contains Dartmouth Outing Club materials, including articles, broadsides, brochures, clippings, correspondence, lists, maps, minutes, photographs, pamphlets, reports, and speeches, as well as Moosilauke Ravine Camp's own ghost story. Dartmouth notables mentioned include John Sloan Dickey, Ross McKenney, Douglas Wade, Robert Monahan and Virgil Poling.

Biography

John A. Gustafson was born March 31, 1925 in Boston, MA. He participated in Marine V-12 training at Dartmouth College from 1943-1945, and after WWII returned to the College and received his AB degree in 1948. He married Nancy Johnson in 1951, and received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1954.He began his career as an Assistant Professor of Biology at SUNY-Brockport in 1954, and moved to the Cortland campus in 1955. Two years later he was promoted to Associate Professor, and to full Professor in 1963. He was Chair of the Dept. of Biological Sciences from 1965-1977. Gustafson was active in his field, and also in the community, promoting environmental awareness.He was President of the Alliance for Environmental Education (1974), a member of the Temporary State Commission on Youth Education in Conservation (1969-1973), editor of Nature Study, Journal of Environmental Education and Interpretation (1965-1979), and Project Director of a National Science Foundation Grant for Outdoor Science Education (1980-1982). In his community of Homer, NY, Gustafson served on the zoning board, the planning board, and was Chairman of the Homer Planning Review Committee from 2001-2002, as well as participating in his church and regional environmental activities. He received several awards for distinguished service in leadership and environmental causes.
