Abstract:

Brock Brower (1931-2014), author, journalist, and professor. Dartmouth College Class of 1953. Contains magazines, books, typewritten drafts of articles and books, as well as both unbound and bound early editions. Also contains correspondence with editors, handwritten notes and drafts of many speeches.

The materials represented in this guide may be accessed through the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College. Rauner Library is located in Webster Hall. The materials must be used on-site and may not leave Rauner Library.

Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Brock Brower contains typewritten drafts, correspondence, both unbound and bound early editions of his work, magazines and speeches. The process of his writing is revealed in correspondence with editors and handwritten notes on the people he covered, often political figures. The papers also document his time as senior speechwriter in the office of the Attorney General, including written versions of many speeches.

Biography

Brock Brower (1931-2014.) Dartmouth College class of 1953 and Rhodes Scholar. Brower was a writer, journalist, and professor. His interests lay primarily in political writing, and he wrote articles for magazines including "New York Times Magazine," "Esquire," "Life," and "Harper's," in addition to several books. He later wrote for the television show 20/20, and was a senior speechwriter in the office of the U.S. Attorney General. Brower also taught at Princeton University and at Dartmouth College.

Contains magazines as well as personal correspondence relating to, among other things, Brower's and friends' writing, specifically his time writing at Princeton University. Of note are letters from "Casque & Gauntlet," the senior society at Dartmouth, his feelings on conservatism at Dartmouth in the 1980s, and communication regarding his daughter Alison's application to the college. There is also a photocopied letter from Ronald Reagan to his brother, Charles Brower, and other letters about politics.

Contains a journal including projections for a novel and personal entries, a bound manuscript of "Oh, Susannah!" by Brower, a copy of the Aegis (Dartmouth yearbook) from 1953, a large stack of mathematics and science "Learning Laboratory" exercise books, and several books, some of which include writing by Brower.

Contains copies of several journals to which Brower was a contributor, including the "TriQuarterly" and "The American Scholar." There is also a copy of "Adventures in Playmaking," which includes a work by Brower, dedicated to Brower by the editor, John W. Parker.

Contains many typescript drafts of Brower's works, including articles, plays, short stories, and poetry, a bound copy of "Penniless to Bed," a novella, and correspondence with editors about these works. There are several letters from students of a class he taught in 1958, and news clippings, a speech, and correspondence relating to a Miami Writers' Conference at which he spoke. In addition, there are notes and newspaper clippings saved by Brower.

Contains articles and extensive handwritten notes on the biographies of people presumably described in articles he later wrote. Also included are documents issued by the U.S. Department of Justice and other governmental agencies regarding these people. Of note is an illustrated description of Jackie Kennedy's wardrobe for a three-day visit to France, designed by Oleg Cassani, one of the people he studied.

Contains typewritten drafts of Brower's articles, photocopies of the published versions, a "Guidebook to Diplomatic Reception Rooms" produced by the Department of State, "Report of the Independent Counsel In Re Vincent W. Foster, Jr.," information regarding health concerns, and newspaper clippings and handwritten notes on the people his articles cover. Of note are edited drafts of a piece "Lost in the Treasure Room," that Brower wrote about Rauner Special Collections Library, and correspondence with Dartmouth representatives requesting his work and editing his writing.
