Abstract:

George French Theriault (1911-1984), professor of sociology. Dartmouth College Class of 1933. Contains documents related to his tenure as professor of sociology at Dartmouth College including class and lecture notes, student papers, schedules, student rosters, student evaluations, reports, pamphlets, journals, some personal and professional correspondence, audio reels, audio tapes as well as some of his own class notes from the 1930's and his dissertation entitled "The Franco-Americans in a New England Community - A Experiment in Survival."

Introduction to the Collection

The Papers of George Theriault contains documents related to his tenure as professor of sociology at Dartmouth College. They include class and lecture notes, student papers, schedules, student rosters, student evaluations, reports, pamphlets, journals, some personal and professional correspondence, audio reels, audio tapes as well as some of his own class notes from the 1930's and his dissertation entitled "The Franco-Americans in a New England Community - A Experiment in Survival."

Biography

George French Theriault, born April 19, 1911 in Nashua, NH graduated from Dartmouth College in 1933 and received his MA from Harvard University in 1942 and his Ph.D. in 1951. He started at Dartmouth College in 1936 as a teacher of sociology with a special interest in human relations, small groups, intergroup relations, and occupation and professions. He was chairman of the sociology department from 1957-1961. He became the first Lincoln Filene professor of human relations in 1962 and a visiting research professor of sociology at the University of Montreal from 1967-1968. He is the author of "Survey of Alcoholism in New Hampshire" 1948 and "Institutional Nursing in New Hampshire," 1958. He retired from teaching in 1976 and died in 1984.

Contains personal correspondence from the 1940's and the 1970's regarding the Shribman Family, including Dave Shribman ‘76, and Philip Shribman ‘41 (missing in action in Pacific), as well as files on other students including Jim Stearns and Ray Hall. Also contains a file relating to the hiring of Prof. Susan Milmoe (1976), a membership certificate of the American Sociological Society (1959), scholarly papers, "Sociology Bulletin" with class photo (1951), some professional correspondence, student papers, class "logs" from the 1950's, student exams, class notes, John Eldrege Journal Psych 27, Tucker House (1974).
