Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Robert Scott Monahan consist of correspondence, news clippings, magazine articles, memoranda, notes, note cards, photographs, agendas, maps, mailing lists and reports. The documents span Monahan's life from his youth as a high school student and athlete in Pawtucket, Rhode Island to his retirement and death in1994. The collection includes documents from Monahan's time with the United States Forest Service, Mount Washington and the Observatory that he was instrumental in founding there in 1932. The collection includes material about Dartmouth, the Dartmouth Class of 1929 and the Outing Club. Personal correspondence and news clippings about natural areas of New Hampshire make up a great deal of the collection. The collection also contains records from Monahan's participation in the New Hampshire State Legislature organized by date and by issue.

Biography

Robert Scott Monahan was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on Novemer 24, 1907. Monahan graduated from Dartmouth College in 1929. While in college, Monahan was a co-captain of the track team and a member of the Dartmouth Outing Club. In later years, Monahan became a class officer and organized correspondence and reunions for his classmates. Monahan received a Masters of Forestry from the Yale School of Forestry in 1931. He worked for the United States Forest Service for many years and also served as the Dartmouth College Forester. He had a particular interest in Mount Washington and other natural areas in New Hampshire. In 1932, he was among the founders of the Mount Washington Observatory. He was elected to the New Hampshire State House of Representatives in 1956, and later served in the New Hampshire State Senate. In the Senate, Monahan introduced a bill that made the purple finch the state bird of New Hampshire. Monahan died in Laconia, NH in 1994 at the age of 86.
