Introduction to the Collection

The papers of Samuel Smith contain correspondence, clippings, and legal documents related to a physical altercation between Mr. Smith and an undergraduate student, Benjamin Hart. Mr. Hart worked for 'The Dartmouth Review,' a politically conservative campus newspaper. The incident received widespread national coverage and highlighted issues surrounding the perceived marginalization of conservative politics on campuses, as well as issues of freedom of speech and of the press.

Samuel Smith (19 -). Dartmouth College class of 1949. Former Associate Director of the Dartmouth Alumni Fund.
