Introduction to the Collection

The papers of J.J. Lankes contain correspondence, paintings, prints, woodcuts, wood engravings, etchings, woodblocks, book manuscripts and photographs. Correspondents include Herbert F. West, a professor at Dartmouth College, who was a close friend of Lankes as well as his contact at Harper and Brothers, Arthur W. Rushmore. Also present are hundreds of woodcut prints reflective of the entire corpus of Lankes output including subjects related to Robert Frost's 'Gulley Farm' and New England rural life; his trip to Germany; Pennsylvania Dutch Barns; Williamsburg, VA; and designs for bookplates. The collection also contains the manuscript for Lankes 1932 book 'A Woodcut Manual."

In addition to J.J. Lankes papers there is correspondence and other material created by Lankes' son J.B. (Julius Bartlett) which chronicles his efforts to secure a legacy for his father through the sale and dissemination of his father's work to private collectors and institutions.

A detailed listing of Lanke's prints held by Dartmouth is available in the repository.
