Dexter Martin was born on August 10, 1915, in New York City. He attended Dartmouth College with the class of 1936, but did not graduate due to financial difficulties. He went into business and then joined the ski troops during WWII. He attended Columbia University and NYU under the G.I. Bill before returning to Dartmouth as a senior and graduating with the class of 1949. He received an MA in American Civilization from Penn and taught at a variety of universities until he found his place as an English professor at South Dakota State University. A self-declared humanist, he continued to write provocative essays, many about religion after his retirement from teaching.
