Abstract:

John Thomas Lanzetta (1926-1989), professor of psychology and researcher. The papers contain research proposals to the National Science Foundation, experimental data, calculations, drafts and published versions of his studies, as well as documents relating to his tenure as a Dartmouth College professor. The Dartmouth materials include papers from the courses he taught and the various committees and projects on which he served, including research projects he directed with the U.S. Air Force and Office of Naval Research, as well as his work with several international psychology organizations.

Introduction to the Collection

This papers of John T. Lanzetta document Lanzetta's extensive research in social psychology, including various research proposals to the National Science Foundation, experimental data, calculations, as well as drafts and published versions of his studies. They also contain documents relating to his tenure as a Dartmouth College professor, including materials both from the courses he taught and the various committees and projects on which he served. Research projects he directed with the U.S. Air Force and Office of Naval Research, as well as his work with several international psychology organizations, are also documented.

Biography

John Thomas Lanzetta was born April 24, 1926, in Long Beach, New York. He received a BS from Lafayette College in 1948, and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Rochester in 1952. From 1953-1956, he worked as a research psychologist in the Air Force, and from 1956-1965, he was chairman and professor of psychology as well as the director of the Center for Research and Social Behavior at the University of Delaware. He was hired by Dartmouth College as professor of psychology in 1965, a position he held until his retirement in 1977. In addition Professor Lanzetta was an editor for the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, a member of the advisory committee for the Office of Civil Defense, a consultant for the Veterans Administration and author of numerous book chapters and articles. His research contributed to the study of group performance, imitative responses, affect and emotional expressivity. In 1963, Lanzetta organized a seminal conference in Sorrento, Italy, leading to the establishment of the European Association for Social Psychology. Professor Lanzetta died in 1989 at the age of 63.

Contains Lanzetta's own notes on psychological theories, articles by other psychologists, graphs and instructive images, three sets of computerized data based on questionnaire responses, several papers by students of psychology, a photocopy of "The Conditioning Properties of Facial Expressions: Equipotentiality, Selective Associative Formation, and Nonassociation," an experiment on which Lanzetta worked at Dartmouth College, his report "The Role of Facial Expressions of Emotion in the Activation and Conditioning of Emotional Behavior," another large report on facial expression, and two drafts of "The Effects of Sexual Stimuli of Different Affective Quality on Provocation Induced Aggression," co-authored by Lanzetta.

Contains final editions of two studies, "Facial Expressions of Emotion as Conditioned Stimuli for Human Autonomic Responses," and "Effects of Control and Observation on Pain Responses," and a draft entitled "Effects of Being Observed on Expressive, Subjective, and Physiological Responses to Painful Stimuli," all co-authored by Lanzetta. There is also an edited manuscript and several drafts, accompanied by reviewers' comments, of the eventually titled "Vicarious Instigation and Conditioning of Facial Expressions and Autonomic Responses to a Model's Expressive Display of Pain," also co-authored by Lanzetta. The papers also include articles by other psychologists, handwritten notes, and Lanzetta's correspondence regarding his research and writing.

Contains documents relating to committees on which Lanzetta served at Dartmouth College and various proposals he was involved with, including one for a "Center for the Study of Social Change" and a related proposal, "Project IMPRESS," worked on with John Kemeny. There are meetings notes, correspondence, and written reports for the President's Commission on the Organization of Faculty, the Committee on Organization and Policy, the Committee on Sponsored Activity, and the Filene Endowment. In addition, the papers contain correspondence and blueprints for a proposed renovation of Wolf Hall at the University of Delaware, IBM punch cards and numerical data from a slide scaling computer program. Also includes "The Control and Measurement of Subjective Uncertainty" by Lanzetta, a draft of "Some Determinants of Individual Differences in Pre-Decision Information Processing Behavior," of which he was co-author, rough drafts of other Lanzetta articles, and articles by other psychologists.

Contains a final graduate thesis "The Role of the Observer's Facial Expressive Response in Vicarious Classical Conditioning," assisted by Lanzetta, and drafts of other authors' papers. Also includes correspondence relating to and drafts of Lanzetta's papers, including the chapter of a book "Social Psychology: Some Selected Topics" accompanied by an unbound early production, and a project done for the U.S. Air Force, "Recommendation for the Use of Simulation Techniques in the Study of Command and Control Problems". This box also contains final publications of some of Lanzetta's studies.

Vaughn, accompanied by written logs of the included documents.
