The materials represented in this guide may be accessed through the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College. Rauner Library is located in Webster Hall. The materials must be used on-site and may not leave Rauner Library.

Rauner Special Collections Library is open to the public and in most cases no appointment is necessary. The exception is in the case of materials stored off site for which there may be a delay of up to 48 hours in retrieval. Introduction to the Collection

Contains academic papers, class materials, drawings, clay models, correspondence, Dartmouth memorabilia and photographs from Miano's time at Dartmouth College (1951-1955). Mostly composed of academic papers (notes, syllabi, exams, etc.), Winter Carnival-related drawings, clay models and photographs and Phi Delta Alpha-related photographs. Also included is Dartmouth admissions literature from 1951, along with Miano's Great Issues journals from 1954-55, an LP recording and transcript of a speech assignment and several photographs of 1955 commencement as well as pencil and ink sketches for "The Dart" and the "Jack O' Lantern".

Biography

Louis Miano (b. 1934) was a member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1955. While at Dartmouth, he was a member of Phi Delta Alpha fraternity. Miano went on to receive a Master's degree in English literature from Columbia University in 1958. He then worked as a writer for TV Guide (1958-59) and Look Magazine (1959-61). He became an editor at Show Magazine in 1961 (theater editor, 1961-62; west coast editor, 1962-63). Miano then wrote at ABC-TV from 1963-65. He became a part of AC&R Advertising in 1965 (writer, 1965-69; copy chief, 1967-69; creative director, 1970-; executive vice president, 1976-). He is a trustee of the Marymount Manhattan Collection and the Central Park Historical Society and currently resides in New York City.

Subjects include Geology, Economics, Art, Government, History, English, Psychology, Music, Astronomy, Sociology, Comparative Literature, Zoology and Philosophy. Some notebooks contain sketches and/or drawings in the margins.

Contains final exams, syllabi, assorted class texts and notes, drawings, concert programs and other loose material associated with Miano's notebooks (see Box 1). Also contains papers associated with an LP recording of a speech class assignment.

Contains admissions correspondence and papers, transfer credit and Grimes English Prize correspondence, the Delta Tau Delta newsletter from 1955, calendars and drawings. Also contains newspaper clippings and photographs, mostly associated with Dartmouth's Winter Carnival of 1954 and 1955, Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and 1955 Commencement. Photographs include views of Baker Library, Webster Hall (now Rauner Library), Sanborn House, the Connecticut River and the interior of the Phi Delta Alpha fraternity.

Contains oversized drawings, photographs and one LP recording. Most of the material is related to Winter Carnival. Contains the original sketch for the 1955 Winter Carnival sculpture, "Nanook of the North." The LP record is from an undergraduate speech class (see Box 2 for associated papers).
