The materials represented in this guide may be accessed through the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College. Rauner Library is located in Webster Hall. The materials must be used on-site and may not leave Rauner Library.

Rauner Special Collections Library is open to the public and in most cases no appointment is necessary. The exception is in the case of materials stored off site for which there may be a delay of up to 48 hours in retrieval. Introduction to the Collection

The collection includes account books originating from the upper Connecticut River valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont as well as outlying New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maine towns. The majority of the books are from the 18th and 19th centuries, but a few extend into the 20th Century. The types of accounts represented reflect the rural geography in which the books were kept and include general stores, agricultural enterprises, merchants of various sorts, post offices, physicians, pharmacists, along with individual or family accounts. Some account books are unidentified. Many volumes contain ephemeral items tipped into the pages; including letters, recipes, newspaper articles, printed advertisements, and plants. Some books also contain death records, diary entries, or children's drawings. Of note in the collection are accounts of Dartmouth students, Hanover, NH business accounts, and a large quantity of business and individual accounts from Bath, Hanover, and Lyme, NH and Norwich and Windsor, VT. The collection was built over a long period of time by the Dartmouth College Library and is arranged alphabetically by town.
