Biography

William Jewett Tucker, president of Dartmouth College from 1893 to 1909, minister and author, was born in Griswold, Connecticut in 1839. Dr. Tucker graduated with the class of 1861 from Dartmouth College and subsequently pursued the ministry at the Andover Theological seminary in 1863 after a short period of teaching. After his graduation from Andover in 1867, Tucker entered ministerial work at the Franklin Street Church in Manchester, NH. In 1876, Tucker moved to the Madison Square Presbyterian Church, New York, and in 1880 returned to the Andover Seminary as the chair of homiletics. While working at Andover, Tucker was involved in the "Andover Controversy" when some faculty members were charged with calling for liberalization of Congregational views. Tucker left Andover to become Dartmouth's 9th president, He was credited with strengthening and improving the then troubled institution: during his tenure as president Tucker brought the college out of debt, nearly quadrupled student enrollment and number of faculty, broadened the curriculum, increased the college's invested capital by $1.5 million and built more than twenty new college buildings. Dr. Tucker married first Charlotte Rogers, and second Charlotte Cheever. He had three daughters, Alice, Margaret and Elizabeth. Dr. Tucker died in Hanover, New Hampshire, September 29, 1926.
