Introduction to the Collection

The Ernest J. Knoche collection contains material related to the SS Eleazar Wheelock and the SS Dartmouth Victory, including Knoche's correspondence with the Liberty Ship Memorial Program, the US Department of Commerce, the American President Line, the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and the American Institute of Marine Underwriters. Photocopies with details of these ships, including arrival and departure ports and times are also included.

Biography

Ernest J. Knoche was a native of Brooklyn, New York. He attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and received his ensign's commission at Pensacola Naval Air Station in 1941. During World War II, Knoche was a naval aviator with the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. After completing a two-year course at General Line School in Monterey, California from 1946-1948, he became project officer for "Skyhook," a high-altitude balloon research project of the Office of Naval Research in Washington. In 1951, Knoche received a BS degree in Aeronautical Engineering. His many postings include navigator on the aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge and congressional liaison officer for the Executive Office of the Secretary of the Navy. In 1965, Knoche assumed command of the U.S. Naval ROTC unit at Dartmouth College.
